Google announced its open source browser chrome today which will further heat up the browser wars which have started in mid 90s with micrsof t announcing Internet explorer to be free and neetscape navigator who was the leader in the browser market have to follow suit and from then the microsoft was able to pullup netscape from their numero uno position. microsoft continued to lead and influence web developers and designer alike till one day mozilla launched its super cool firefox which was taken very well by the users world over but still the number of ie’s are huge inspite of developers and designers reluctance to support it.
So instead of operating system Google was building a browser which peoples now a days is used to run more applications than any desktop OS. google have put a comic book to show the features of chrome that include a multiple threaded Javascript virtual machine built on top of webkit which is surprising since the earlier rumour’s of google browser was speculating that google’s browser wil be built on the lines of mozilla.
Googles announcement have came just after some time of its anouncement of continued financial support to firefox till 2011 whose major share of revenues are coming from google for just including a default google search box . the chrome will at first be availaible only for windows and it might follow the same strategy as followed by microsoft to distribute IE with windows and using IE to get traffic to its internet services.the only difference will be that google will use its popular services to distribute chrome like the way it did for firefox by showing message to users to get chrome instead and it will include support for its various applications in chrome.
There might soon be a mobile version of chrome too before the scheduled launch of android . The continued funding to mozilla signals that google will instead be in competition with msie rather than firefox but the demo of chrome indicates it will be a memory eating browser which may scare a significant number of users who can continue to use IE but in long run chrome can corner a big user base and there support to firefox may not continue in future
This is the demo of chrome

i,ll not go into the technical or the usability bit. only the strategy part…in fact i read it in a blog, so it,s not my original thought. the big flaw in google’s strategy is that till now they have been fighting microsoft saying, that they bundle their OS with IE, so that other browsers are left behind, etc.
and here they have integrated their search with their browser, which is very similar and thus weakens their case against microsoft.
