A US Federal court gave open source movement a significant victory . In the ruling court said just because a software programmer gave away his work did not mean that it could not be protected.
The ruling also has implications on creative commons license. The court ruled that The Artistic License grants users the right to copy, modify, and distribute the software but with conditions ( and not just covenants) . earlier a lower court had ruled that the terms of the open-source contract were overly broad. The ruling came in a case between Robert G. Jacobsen Vs Mr. Katzer.
